Hi Guys and Galls,
Just a quick message to Grandad Bill.
OF COURSE YOUR STILL WELCOME AND USEFUL!
Once you get involved with THE GREATEST SCOUT GROUP IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!! (Sorry....got carried away a bit there for a moment, I am always under-exagerating)!
You are involved for life.
Mind you, it's the nicest "life sentence" anyone could have.
Anyway, onto another issue.....The Endeavour is our Headquarters and we should all be proud of it.
Jim and Heather have both put a vast amount of time and effort into keeping the HQ presentable.
Don't you think it's about time the individual sections helped.
PLEASE,PLEASE...don't all jump down my throat..........I am merely suggesting that we all "muck in" and help keep OUR HQ clean and tidy.
Jim has enough on his plate being our wonderfulGroup Scout Leader.
Heather has enough on her plate organising the buffets and hospitalities for the guests that make use of the Endeavour.
All the leaders have enough on their plates looking after their various sections.
Note to all the Beavers,Cubs,Scouts and Explorers...............3RD DAVYHULME (The greatest blah blah blah) does not just do anything on your section night! Everything that you do is very carefully planned down to the finest detail. The leaders spend the majority of their free time working out ways of giving yiou total enjoyment and satisfaction. From the GSL to the Beaver Adult Assistants I think that you should give them a pat on the back, a "jolly well done" and all that.
So come on you young persons, have some pride.... This is YOUR Scout Group,Your Scout Headquarters, it's Your time!
Best Regards to all, yours in Scouting,
Baden Bill

Hi guys. Hope you all enjoyed last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Im just annoyed I couldnt keep going a bit longer. Im sat here at work with two matchsticks in my eyes to keep them open! I cant do New Years Eve as I've got a paying job in Altrincham. If I didnt catch up with you last night can I take this opportunity to wish all members of the band and group and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from myself as Friday was my last band job this year due to work commitments etc and I probably wont see you now until the New Year. Hi guys

After the good night had by all last year what would you all say to a New Year's Eve do at the hut with of course me providing some grooves. Im off New Year for once this year until 3rd January so let me know what you all think either at band or on here. I've got no bookings yet for New Year's Eve so if you are quick and let me know if you want to do it again or not, I can tell all my agents I am sorted. If no takers, I'll obviously be elsewhere. Yo guys

Do you fancy another New Years Eve Disco this year. If you do Im all yours at the moment this year. I know last years went down well and wondered if you fancied another one with a 'real' DJ (sorry Stuart!). If you do let me know either on here or at band. If you want one brilliant. If not I can start ringing my agents and see if anything is going around. I'll give you guys first shout this year after what happened last year

hi everyone dont know if you remember me. Was in band during late 70's and early 80's. Dad (barry) drove that executive bus - ha ha - to places like poole and the Albert hall where my brother Ian pulled a moonie out the back of the bus window and we were stopped by a car full of nuns!!!!! Mother wasnt impressed and her bucket full of chicken drumsticks she made for every competition trip out nearly got thrown at him. Will try and get some old video footage to bring to reunion but dont know if I can get in time from Ma and Pa in Oz. Our Stu is also in Oz and has some good memories of the band days. Hi Jim and Dennis. Biff got your e mail ta hopefully see you there

Hi guys. Sorry if I was abrupt in storming out tonight. I was actually going to work but was a bit gutted at being dropped again from the show, or thats the way it came across to me anyway. I have had to book the Manchester weekend off work and I am fighting for the TYMBA Nationals weekend as well so I feel like I am wasting my leave if I am going to be in and out of the show all the time. I know its not Dennis' fault. Its this stupid TYMBA rule re over 25's. Thats what you get for being an old person I suppose! Stevie 'G'

The 1st Ormskirk are presently considering reforming thier band after 40 or so years and i was enquiring wether you could offer any advise or contacts that would be some where around the Ormskirk and District area?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Steve, We would be glad to help. I am the area band adviser and the band is a beacon band for FOYMBA. If you can make it over to Manchester we would be glad to have a chat. Our HQ is very near the Trafford Centre and we practise on Thursday evenings 7-9. However, this Thursday we are taking part in a concert with another Scout group to raise funds for their new HQ. (Tickets £3 each) You are welcome to come along.
Have you seen the factsheet on scoutbase uk about starting a band?
Best wishes,
Jim

Whoever put the above comment on has a point. The only page that seems to be updated on a regular basis is this Guest Book.
This site has the potential to be really impressive, but it just isn't updated often enough. The home page, for example, hasn't been updated for months. As it is the first impression that visitors get of the site, it really should be updated at least on a monthly basis.
Chris Hansford
14 April 2007 00:00:00
Im going to back up the webmaster here.
Do the people think that updating a website is a full time occupation? U are sadly mistaken. As well as doing the websites, the webmaster also has to juggle Scouting activities, Social requirements, Family life and Personal Commitments. Which is alot more than most people.
Be thankful that your group has its own website, some groups do not have the dedication of your leaders to even start one, let alone simply update it once in a while.
Your webmaster is NOT a mindreader..... are people asking him to put things on? People are so quick to complain about it, but dont seem to be doing anything to help.
el stevo
11 April 2007 00:00:00

Who did the web site it's pretty good, do they provide lessons ?

I remember Pamela, from when I was in the Cubs, didn't her Dad work with our Dad, Norman Heap? a Foreman? may be confused there ( well I was very little then )

I also remember the Chief Scout visit and working on the paths with you and clearing out that structure with the moons and stars in its roof, and that brick incident had nothing to do with me, actually I only vaguely remember that. Wasn't Brendan the one who was always getting injured, scolds , broken arms, split lips, bit tongues, etc. etc. .

I did damaged my teeth carrying a scout drum whilst riding my bike (not recommended) the main thing was the the drum was fine, built to last those rope tension side drums.

Also remember being in the guard of honour at Keith Till's wedding and them having to bend forward to go through a tunnel created by staffs held by cubs ( cubs don't have swords) did get a big knife though when I joined the Scouts as did most of us.

Are Scouts allowed to carry knives these days? probably not, don't know how but Ray Mears seems gets away with it, still he sleeps under a tarp, pansy, try branches and bracken for a few days, however I do enjoy his programmes

Pamela, There're some names from the past! We must have been neighbours! I lived on the corner of Lincoln and Bromton, number16. I have a sister Stephanie, and three younger brothers Peter, Brendan & Martin. There are only 3 years between me (Jimmy) Peter & Brendan. I rember the Chief Scout's Visit well; it was my second camp as a scout. The first, a few weeks earlier, was spent helping put new paths in at Middlewood. I had a brick hit my head and ended up in hospital. When the Chief, Lord Rowallen, came round to our campsite, I got to shake his hand. Since then I have managed to do the same with every Chief Scout we have had. I got Peter Duncan outside the gents at Gilwell on his first day as Chief Scout. (I made sure that he had washed his hands.) I was in Rowallen Troop (Thur). Our Peter and Brendan would have been in Powell Pack, I am sure that Peter went on the visit. I can also remember being in the Guard of honour at Keith Till's Wedding in Sale. I went to see his Mum (and I think she had married Rodney's Dad when they were widow and widower?) to see if they could fill in any missing gaps in the group history and put me in touch with old members. When she asked me were I lived I pointed to my house. She lived at 1 Norwich, I lived at 11! I haven't heard anything since. Alan Spinks & Ann Barlow got married and moved to the Isle of Man. Alan was in the police there and in the '80s the cubs used to go there every year for the pack holiday and meet up. I also went to the wedding of Harold Thomas who lived down the road from us. He married Angela Hill who was a Cub leader and a nurse at Park Hospital. They moved to Marple. Arthur worked at the post office (now BT) as did Rod Ward. I will get a message to him to look at this site. I am sure that he will be able to add more light to the past members. John Prole lives in Stanley Green, Wigan and up to a few years ago the band used to play at the school fate at which he was a school governer. His older brother Jim lives on Granville Road off Mossvale. I remember Arthur Read as one of the drummers in the band. He worked as a chemist on Crofts Bank Road for years. Last year we were asked to play in the Victorian Weekend in Urmston. We pointed out the Scouts didn't start until 1907 after Victoria was dead. However, we dug out some old rope drums and old bugles, dressed in shorts with BP hats and made lots of noise. It went down well and by some fluke a man came over and introduced himself as ?? Smith. He had been a cub leader in 3D and worked at the Co-op at the Circle shops, before emigrating to Canada. He was in Urmston just for the day. At the time all these people were all grown up to me. I was 11. You must all have been 16 to 20. We would be glad of any old photos to add to the group archive. I have one of the band on St George's Day parade, marching down Canterbury Road, of Colin Payne, myself, our Peter, lead by Dennis Openshaw. It's the only one we have from that time and I am about 14. The spookey thing about it is that we were trying to work out where it was and realised it's taken outside the house where I now live!
If you have any photos, please email them to my address, j.fieldgsl@ntlworld.com
As you will have seen, we are looking into setting up a designated page for reuniting past members. This will hopefully be publisised in our District bulletin and in the local paper.
Best wishes, Jim (Jimmy)

Thanks for your interesting reply Jim. The names bring back even more memories. You might have known my brother Tony Heap, we lived in Norwich Road as did Arthur (Charlie) Read and Rodney lived just round the corner on Moss Vale Road. Arthur sent me a letter from the 1957 Jamboree and I still have the envelope with the commemorative Jamboree stamp. I?d be glad to hear news from him if he reads this. Same goes for anyone else who remembers me.
I?m glad the old 1st Urmston Cub flag has an honoured place on your wall, I would probably have carried on leading at the Congy if I had not moved to Stockport when I was married.

I have a photograph of the two 3rd D cub packs and leaders at Middlewood for the Chief Scout?s visit in May 1959. Walter Bee, Alan Spinks, Anne Barlow, John Prole Rodney and myself and others are on it ? I wonder whether you are one of the cubs. I could email you a copy if you are interested. Just tell me how/where to send it and I will. I showed the photograph to Walter Bee a few years ago when I met him at the Family History Library in Manchester some years before he died. I gave him a copy - he was pleased because he didn't remember the photo.

Pamela,
I joined the group in '55 and was in Baden Pack, that met at Lostock School. I don't remember much about the Jamboree. I was a Wolf Cub at the time. We have one or two ex-members we are in contact with, who are older than me, both I am sure took part either camping near or at the jamboree site. One is Chris Darn, his mum helped with Cubs, Powell Pack, Barton Clough School, his dad (Chris) was the Rover Scout Leader about the same time. He later became the GSL. The other is Rod (Rodney) Ward, currently the Mayor of Trafford's husband. Both helped with the Cub Packs and played in the Band. I have leant Rod a photo album that came from Roland Enser (Owl) Scout Leader. One of the other leaders Jim Tribilcock moved to Chorley to take up a post in the Morman Church. I called round to see him to invite him to our 50th but he didn't make it. However, Ian Mckensey did, coming all the way from Glasgow where he became a Scout Commisioner. The GSL at this time was Bob Actkins. He lived in a flat on Flixton Road. I hope some of the names may jog some memories.
As you will have see from our web site we are as strong as ever, carrying on the Scouting spirit. On the wall in the HQ (The Endeavour III) we have our old flags. We also have the Cub flag from 1st Urmston. When it closed the few remaining cubs and scouts joined 3D and some years later we were given the flag.
Last Thusday I received an award for 40 years as a leader. I would like to think that I have influenced the boys & girls that have been members of 3D the way that all the names above (and a few more Thomas, Till, Openshaw,Sanders, Read, Bee) influenced me. You can add yourself to the list. We are looking forward to the jamboree. We have yet to finalise our programme. We are playing in the opening of the sunrise ceremony on Wednesday Ist August and the closing on the same day. We will be rehearsing on the Tuesday, so will be going down on the Monday. But if the Band take part in the Euro Marching Show Band Championships we will go there from Bath on the Sunday, we think!
Watch this space for more news.

Hi everyone,
I was in 2nd Urmston Guides in the 1950's and helped out with one of the 3rd D cub packs. I later went on the be assistant cub master at 1st Urmston (Congy).
Is there any one out there who went to the Sutton Coldfield Jamboree on a special train charted by the District Scouts August 1957? - I think it would be Bank Holiday which used to be at the beginning of August.

I have just booked tickets to visit the 2007 Jamboree - exactly 50 years later! 4 of us 'oldies' having a nostalgia trip!

If anyone has any old photos of the gang on the train or the train leaving Urmston station I'd be very grateful for a copy. Or for any other photo taken that day.

I have many happy memories of Guides and also 3rd D where I had lots of friends if you are organizing an event for your 60th I can think of people who would be interested in a meeting up again.
Best wishes to all at 3rd D.

I think the band friends reunited area would be great however as its the groups 60th anniversary this year and all the celebrations Jim and Dennis have in mind I do agree with the below comment about it being a group friends reunited to get all old group members back together discussing things etc and also for advertisement etc for the 60th anniversary celebrations

Also re the anon below I think they need to get a life. I know the explorers and Ian are working really hard on this new site and the old one was hardly never updated by a person who shall remain nameless

What do you all think about having a 3rd Davhulme "Band Freinds Reunited" page? This would be quite useful in the run up to the reunion event as it would start to build a mailing list of ex band members.

Tell us what you think and we will start to work on the pages.

Perhaps on your next visit Anon, you can tell us why you want to remain hidden? "Im not going to tell"!! the speculation may just increase the site hit rate.

Jim, can we have an update for your page please, and your comments are pointed in absolutly the "Correct Direction"

Anon, You must have been looking at a different site than our first one. It was never updated on a weekly basis. The leader that was the webmaster tried his best but was not really up to the job, in spite of being a computer geek. He thought it was his site and rarely consulted with the rest of the group before posting items whereas now I am kept informed beforehand. That site was not a patch on the new one. As for putting more information on, when we can confirm the dates for our programme, we will get it updated. You will see from the comments from others that the new site is far more popular. What I find annoying is that you are not prepared to put your name to your comments.

You must have been the only person to visit the old website. We are very proud to anouce that during the Christmas period this website had its 1000th visitor. Thats not just 1000 hits but 1000 visitors viewing multiple pages and remaining on the site for several minuets. We attract hits from arround the world not just the UK so it is nonsence to suggest that the old website was better in any way.

I do have to admit that we have very little input from the Beavers or Cubs but Im sure this will be resolved in the months to come.

One of your statements is correct! The site hasn't been updated recently. The Scout group is continuously busy! A routine is being set up so that the explorers can take it in turn to spend time updating the website. Just to give you an idea - over the Christmas period each member had their sectional meetings to attend and (if in the band [which a lot are]) Thursday practices AND all of the events that the band were playing at. There were an average of 2 0r 3 events per week and Christmas Eve saw the band playing at the Trafford Centre, Christ Church and the John Alker!!!! I think that all members of the group do well in taking an active part in the group and this will be reflected in the website in the near future!

Just found this site and i am pleased to see 3rd Davyhule scout group still going strong as i am an ex member from 1970 to 1982 in cubs, scouts, venture scouts and the band.I had a great time back then and traveled all over the country camping and doing various outdoor activities, also with the band on the bugle i went to many a parade and band comp. It must have rubbed off on me because i now work for PLG at an outdoor activity center in Dorset. Its good to see Jim and dennis are still involved in the group, giving young people the chance to do something worthwhile with there time.
To anyone in the group reading this i would say make the most of it ,because, these could be some of the best times of your life.

I was reading through 'Scouting For Boys', when I came across B.P.s, original Scout Laws.I just thought that with the centenary coming up it might be rather fun to take a look at some of B.P.s original ideas.
1)A Scouts Honour Is To Be Trusted. If a Scout says "On my honour it is so," that means that it IS so.If a Scout leader says to a Scout"I trust you on your honour to carry out my request to the very best of his or her ability and to let nothing interfere with them doing so.If a Scout were to break his honour by telling a lie or by not carrying out a request from a Scout leader when trusted on his honour to do so,they would then cease to be a Scout and must hand over his scout badge and NEVER be allowed to wear it again---he loses his life,(metaphorically speaking, that is)!
4)A Scout Is A Freind To All, And A Brother To Every Other Scout, No Matter To What Social Class The Other Belongs.(Phew! That was a long one)! Thus, if a scout meets another scout, even though a stranger to him, he must speak to him, and help him any way that he can.Either to carry out the duty he is then doing, or by giving him food,or, as far as possible, anything that they might be in want of.A scout must never be a SNOB! A snob is someone who looks down upon another because they are poorer, or, who is poor and resents another because he is rich.A scout accepts the other person as they find them and makes the best of them.
'Kim', the boy scout, was called by the Indians "Little freind of all the world"and that is the name that every scout should earn for themselves.
(This next one is a doozee!)
7)A Scout Obeys Orders!!!!!!!!!! A scout obeys orders of his patrol leader or scout leader WITHOUT QUESTION?????????(mmmmmmmmmm, have to think on that one).Even if a scout gets an order that they do not like, they must do it as soldiers and sailors do, they must carry it out all the same 'because it is their duty, and after they have done this only then can they state any reason against it!(Oh yes, I like that bit)!!!!!Nevertheless, they must carry the order out at once.THAT IS DISCIPLINE!
Finally, possible the nicest scout law of all.
8)A Scout Smiles And Whistles, under all circumstances?(Difficult to do when you are playing a trumpet though).
Whena scout gets an order ,they should obey it cheerily and readily, not in a slow hang-dog sort of way.
Scouts never gripe at hardships, nor whinge at , or ,to each other, or swear when put out.(Yeah, can really see that last bit working)!!!!
When you miss a train, or someone treads on your favourite corn(OWWW)- not that a scout should have such things as corns-or under any annoying circumstances, you should force yourself to smile at once, and then whistle a tune, and you will be alright!(Ah! So thats where we have all been going wrong!)
A scout goes about with a smile on and whistling. It cheers the scout up and cheers other people up as well, especially in times of danger, for the scout keeps it up all the same.
BUT GET THIS NEXT BIT!
The punishment for swearing or using bad languageis for each offence, a mug of cold water to be poured down the offenders sleeve by all the other scouts.(YES, LOVE THAT ONE TO DEATH)!
As a final footnote, on page 44,45 and 46, you will find other laws that B.P.made.
Somehow, with the modern day scouts, some of the 'old values' seem to be a bit 'watered down'.Perhaps it would be a good idea, seeing as it is the cenetary in 2007, for all scouts, cubs explorer and yes, leaders as well to just take a few moments to reflect on B.P.s original 'vision', and perhaps that make make some of us re-focus on our own .

Hi Ian,
I am very impressed with the site so far and am interested in helping to finish the rest of it and continue to update it! I have got a few ideas that you may be interested in! We can discuss this on Friday!
As you know I did the cycle route last night for our meet on Friday and have got a series of questions for them to answer on their way round. I will print off a map and work out the bearings for them to follow as their "instructions" of where to go next. The instructions will be typed up and ready to hand out.
I'll talk to you about the fund-raising ideas too!
See you Friday,
Richard
